Leica in-store app

Creating an iOS app to allow salespersons to filter and search camera and lens combinations to showcase the beautiful photos from this iconic brand.

Challenge

One of the most iconic camera brands, Lieca needed a new medium to showcase their best digital images to potential new customers and enthusiasts. The need to display quality images in-store, made us realise there was a huge opportunity being missed. We offered a better way to enable a user to quickly show the wide range of hi-resolution and image capabilities of the cameras and lenses – with a detail that could not be achieved outside a native application.

Approach

Liaising with the CX team in Wetzlar we needed to understand what a tool like this would look like in-store. We decided to build an iPad Pro app which could be circulated widely across their consumer touchpoints with a pilot scheduled for the UK flagship store in Mayfair, London.

Sketching out ideas first then building out the architecture helped us visualise how the user would engage with the app and to find the best value. My role as lead product designer allowed me to apply a strategy driven by customers needs – designing an experience that would resonate with the Leica brand.

 

 

Solution

The design of the app was a reflection of the photojournalist journals to build into the heritage of the Leica brand. I created a functional yet elegant design system that would allow the library of inspiring images to the foreground.

Forming a concise and well thought navigation system would allow users to build camera and lens combinations and filter results in a tactile and intuitive way.

Images could be viewed at ultra high resolutions and users can explore the meta data of each image.

Result

The Leica store in Mayfair UK, is the first to use the app and it is currently under consideration for a European wide rollout. Salespersons and experts at Leica, now use the app to showcase imagery and build stronger customer relationships through a seamless and elegant digital experience.
